ABOUT DR. SASHA

Dr. Sasha Blackwell is a licensed psychologist in New York and Connecticut. She received her doctorate of philosophy (Ph.D.) in Educational Psychology with a specialization in School Psychology from The Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY). She received a Master of Science in Education (M.S. Ed.) from Queens College of the CUNY, a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Psychology from City College of CUNY, and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from New York University.

Dr. Sasha has been practicing in Rye for the last ten years and has worked with children and families for over twenty years. She began her career as a research assistant at NYU Child Study Center working in their Parenting Institute and in an Organizational Skills Intervention of Children with AD/HD. As a doctoral student at The Graduate Center, she taught courses for three years in the Secondary Education and Youth Services department at Queens College of CUNY as a Graduate Teaching Fellow.

After several externships in New York City public schools, she completed a predoctoral internship at The Cooke Center for Learning and Development and Harlem Children’s Zone. After receiving her doctorate, Dr. Sasha did a post-doctoral fellowship at Adelphi University Institute for Parenting where she worked with self-referred families as well as those involved in the child welfare system. She also taught as an instructor in their Post-Masters program in Parent Education and Guidance.  Throughout these ten years, Dr. Sasha did private remediation, tutoring and positive behavior support through PJL Education Services. After her post-doctoral work at Adelphi, Dr. Sasha trained with her mentors for two years. With a limited permit license, she was supervised by clinical psychologist, Dr. Marianne Engle in her New York City practice. She also worked with Doreen Downs Miller, parent educator and philanthropist doing research, curriculum development and program design while being supervised by psychologist Dr. Georgiana Tryon. Dr. Sasha is also a published author, focusing her research on the therapeutic alliance, child psychotherapies, parenting practices, and child temperament. She is in the process of writing a book for clinicians with colleagues describing the developmental-behavioral approach for therapy with children.

Dr. Sasha has particular experience working with: children who are slow learners, children with deficits in executive functions, children with developmental delays/disabilities, infants/toddlers/preschoolers, and children who present with temperamental difficulty. Her specialties include early childhood mental health, externalizing disorders, classroom quality, positive behavioral support, learning difficulties/differences, and instructional strategies/modifications.

Dr. Sasha lives in Rye, New York with her husband and four children.
